Good Training is Good Business
The State of Maryland Employment Development and Training Institute

The State of Maryland Employment Development and Training Institute (EDTI) had a very important challenge to meet; improve the computer skills of Grade 6 Clerical Personnel. Clerical tasks require the use of desktop computing applications, such as Microsoft Office, and those employees who could not perform the necessary tasks were in danger of losing their jobs. The State of Maryland wanted a more skilled workforce and the employees wanted greater opportunity. The answer to both needs was education.

Enki took a very practical approach to the project. Rather than following the traditional task-by-task format, our class was modified to be a results-oriented education that satisfied the specific needs of these employees. Participants in the classes were given skills assessments before and after the training and showed a dramatic increase in all areas tested. Everyone got what they needed. Students experienced improved skills, increased self-esteem, and the confidence that comes from knowing that they are secure in their employment. The State of Maryland was able to retain competent, well trained, employees to fill needed jobs. The state of Maryland EDTI has recognized Enki for our superior resources such as:
  • Knowledgeable instructors who understand the needs of the students.
  • Excellent administrative and customer support.
  • The ability to adjust to a wide range of student skill levels.
  • A willingness and ability to provide creative solutions when needed.

Good training is good business. Let Enki help you reduce employee turnover, improve overall productivity, and give you maximum return on your education dollar.

Technology is Not Enough
Central Collection Agency of the State of Maryland

The Central Collection Unit of the State of Maryland is charged with the responsibility of collecting delinquent debts for a variety of agencies within the State of Maryland. They contact everyone from businesses to individuals that owe money, for various reasons, to state agencies such as the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and Student loan programs. Agents of the Central Collection Unit rely on a large custom database that runs on a Microsoft NT network to initiate their inquiries and to record account activity.

Enki consulted with the Central Collection Unit to find a way for non-expert users to access and use this critical resource. Our consultant created a database in Microsoft Access that would allow various state agencies to submit an automated file for new accounts. The database was designed in such a way that users not familiar with Access could easily type information into a template. Upon receipt of the information to the CCU, this file was converted to text format and loaded into the custom database via a special program. The result is a powerful tool that automates all of the essential operations related to the collections process and makes it easy for clients of the Central Collection Agency to upload new and changed agency data. There are a number of benefits to this solution:
  • The automated features of the Access interface have resulted in improved efficiency that has produced greater productivity and fewer errors.
  • No expensive software had to be purchased and installed. Access was already available to all personnel as part of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • No expensive training was required. The template was created based on a thorough understanding of daily operational needs and was designed to be intuitive in nature and easy to use by anyone.
  • The existing critical custom database was not altered in any way and continues to be a powerful and secure central database.

The best solutions successfully address a defined business need, are accessible by everyone, and enhance existing resources.

Readin’, Writin’ and Technology Olla Standard and Jena Elementary Schools

Olla-Standard and Jena Elementary Schools were committed to applying the power of personal computers to improve the reading and math scores of their students by at least 2%.To achieve this goal they needed two things: money and a knowledgeable partner to help the teachers integrate technology into the curriculum. The funding was provided by The Rapides Foundation, a non-profit organization that awards grants intended to improve employee skills and build technical knowledge. Enki was selected to develop and deliver the curriculum to train the staff at both schools. Enki met this challenge with a complete array of services including:

  • Training classes to educate teachers and staff on how to use existing personal computers and software to enhance classroom learning.
  • On-site consulting for individual teachers to help them apply computing skills to their lesson planning.
  • Yo Mentor Application Support (Phone, e-mail, discussion database)
  • Technology newsletter delivered quarterly with new resources, information, strategies, tools, techniques, links, etc. regarding technology integration
  • Dedicated program management to coordinate all phases of program delivery, including tracking and documentation support to assist the schools in their reporting to The Rapides Foundation.

By the end of the third school year, student math and reading scores had improved by a minimum of 12%, and, in some cases, by as much as 20%. At Enki, we believe in the power of technology to help adults and children be more productive and to help organizations of all shapes and sizes meet their goals. Let us show you how we can develop unique solutions for your organization’s needs.
