Dialogue Four: Making Plans for Implementing Technology

Plans for implementing technology should be based on sound methods and principles. All crafts have methods: carpenters who make houses or fine furniture; the pit crew at a NASCAR race; logisticians who provide for the needs of soldiers during combat. Methods are the key to doing things quickly and accurately.

I am sure you have many methods right now for performing key functions in your business. Some of them, I am sure, are documented in policy and procedure manuals. Why do you have them? Well, the same reasoning applies to technology; it is just too expensive to treat casually.

The methods for implementing technology need not be elaborate. For small companies, a mere twenty pages of text with ample pictures and examples can work.

And they can be written in a language you can understand. Exhort, threaten, cajole, plead, anything you must, but make sure these methods are written in a language you and your business people understand.

These methods are the basis for project planning. Again, plans need not be overly elaborate, but they should exist. Someone has to be responsible (take responsibility) for all the things that have to be accomplished. At a minimum, a plan should indicate that.

Bottom Line: Methods for implementing technology that are appropriately sized for your organization should be in place, understood and used by all who are involved in the deployment of technology.

So, this dialogue should focus on what methods are in place, who is using them, and what is being done to assess their effectiveness?
