Dialogue Seven: Training Those Who Use Technology
Imagine this: A pianist is given years of training and practices until the music is embedded into her soul. Now put mittens on her hands. How does the music sound? It is not hard to imagine. Even though internally everything is in place, those key items (in this case digits) are inhibited from performing. This analogy underscores a recurring situation. Much emphasis is placed on acquiring the right hardware and software; much money is spent to make sure everything works correctly and reliably. The technology is truly ingenious, and could potentially dramatically alter the way business gets done. Sadly, it remains a grossly underused asset. Why? Because in this case the key components, the people who are to use this technology, do not get the training they need. We have seen many instances where thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent on new technology and little or no training is provided to those who have to use it. They are forced to learn what they can through trial and error (very costly) or with the help of an incumbent (very costly). We have seen on more than one occasion, Lotus Notes, a product rich with features that would allow people to share information, collaborate, and help manage daily activities, be used simply for email. If you own a PC with Microsoft Office and only use it to type basic correspondence, then you own one expensive typewriter! Bottom line: You pay for 100% of the asset and its upkeep (estimates put this at 3 to 5 times the purchase price per year); you get barely a fraction of its benefit. Create a dialogue to determine if people are being trained to get benefits that exceed your expense. This means examining and using technology to improve the way people do their jobs. |
