Dialogue Nine: Encouraging Innovation
With the daily pressures of running a business it is difficult to take time to look to the future. Not taking time to examine how technology could be used to create changes could prove to be a big mistake. This dialogue starts with the question, "How do we find the time to be creative?" Here's an idea. Each week, focus on one aspect of your business. It could be delivery of your product to your customers, saving money on office supplies or marketing your product in a new way. Get all employees to participate by submitting ideas during the week. Share the ideas. In all likelihood, most will not be useful. But some will be. Find ways to thank all and perhaps reward those whose ideas are implemented. The focus on this activity need not be exclusively on ideas for using technology. In today's world, however, many of new innovations will involve technology in some way or form. In our own company we use a portion of our monthly staff meeting to have employees (they work in pairs) present information on a pre-selected topic pertinent to our business. After this presentation, the findings are further discussed at the monthly management meeting to determine what relevance the topic has to our future. Bottom line: To compete and grow, you need to know how the future affects your industry and your business goals. Also include these discussion points in your dialogue: Who is looking to the future? Who "brings" that knowledge into the company? How is it used? What process is in place to evaluate the potential of new ideas? What is being done to encourage creativity from everyone? What processes are in place to support their efforts to bring forth ideas? What are we doing to combat inertia, apathy, and resistance to change? |
